I have a different approach to fashion photography than most other fashion photographers. I prefer to work on my own, without any assistants, and with an off-camera speedlight. I feel that there is much more flexibility with this low key approach and we can work more quickly and capture images with a much more natural feel. I rarely use stylists or make-up artists. Rather than have hair perfectly coiffed I prefer the wild and wind blown look that gives the model a more organic look. I recently did a photo shoot in Aspen with Alp-n-Rock, a sport-fashion company that believes in the importance of giving back. Alp-n-Rock donates up to 10% of profits to fund scholarships to girls in developing countries, providing the lifelong gift of an education. How cool is that? I wanted to portray their product in a way that resonated with their unpretentious and heart-felt approach to operating a clothing company. Their tops and jackets feature catchy slogans and are made of high quality materials. They are meant to be worn by active men and women who have a passion for the outdoor life. They are stylish but functional. Aspen seemed like the perfect location to shoot their sporty line of clothing and we lucked out with a beautiful snow storm with sparkling snowflakes falling all around us. Many of their tops and jackets have slogans referencing snow and the mountain lifestyle and fit in perfectly with the streets and ski environment of the resort of Aspen. Hats, scarves and snow boots helped bring even more color and depth to the photos. We walked around the streets and base of Aspen Mountain and allowed the shoot to unfold as we passed icons of this special ski town. It was a cold morning but as were wrapping it up the sun came out and warmed us all up and gave a special sparkle to the fresh and glistening snow!
